International protection of intellectual property, i. e., industrial property and copyright, has been placed on a new worldwide legal footing by virtue of TRIPS, the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, which is linked to the GATT free trade system under the auspices of the newly established World Trade Organization.

The Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights of 1994 constitutes a milestone in the international protection of these rights and the most farreaching agreement to follow the venerable Paris and Berne Conventions. Under the aegis of the newly established World Trade Organization, international intellectual property protection has for the first time been linked to trade policy issues.
